Fashion is a dynamic industry constantly evolving, creating
new trends and styles for people to adopt. While fashion can be a form of
self-expression and creativity, it can also impact mental health. The pressure
to conform to beauty standards, the constant need to stay up-to-date with
trends, and the rise of fast fashion can all contribute to mental health
issues.
This essay will explore the effect of fashion on mental
health, including body image, self-esteem, social comparison, and the
environmental impact of fast fashion. It will also discuss how techniques can promote
positive mental health and self-expression.
Body Image and Self-Esteem
One of fashion's most important ways to impact mental health
is through body image and self-esteem. Fashion trends often promote a
particular body type or beauty standard, making individuals feel inadequate or
unhappy with their appearance. This can lead to various mental health issues,
including anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.
Studies have shown that exposure to images of thin,
idealized bodies can hurt body image and self-esteem. For example, a study by
Dr. Sarah Grogan found that exposure to images of skinny models increased body
dissatisfaction and decreased self-esteem in both men and women (Grogan, 2007).
The fashion industry has been carped for perpetuating
unrealistic beauty standards and endorsing unhealthy body image. For example, many
models are underweight, and Photoshop and airbrushing have led to an
unrealistic portrayal of beauty in magazines and advertisements. Unfortunately,
this can make individuals feel they need to conform to these standards to be
accepted or successful.
Social Comparison
Another way in which fashion can impact mental health is
through social comparison. Social contract theory suggests that individuals
evaluate themselves based on comparisons with others (Festinger, 1954). In fashion,
individuals may compare their appearance, clothing, or style to others, leading
to feelings of inadequacy or inferiority.
Social media has exacerbated this issue, as individuals can
now compare themselves to more people online. In addition, the rise of
influencers and bloggers has created a new form of celebrity, where individuals
with large followings showcase their lifestyles and fashion choices. Unfortunately,
this can make individuals feel they need to keep up with the newest trends to
fit in or be accepted.
Fast Fashion and the Environment
The rise of fast fashion has also impacted mental health,
albeit indirectly. Fast fashion refers to producing low-cost clothing, often
made from synthetic materials, designed to be worn briefly before being
discarded. Fast fashion has been criticized for its negative environmental
impact, as it contributes to pollution, waste, and the depletion of natural
resources.
While the environmental impact of fast fashion may not be immediately apparent, it can impact mental health. Climate change and environmental degradation can lead to despair, hopelessness, and anxiety, known as eco-anxiety (Bourne, 2021). The influence of fast fashion on the environment can also make individuals feel powerless or guilty, as they may feel like they are contributing to the problem.@ Read More:-fittnessicon
Positive Effects of Fashion on Mental Health
Despite the potential negative impact of fashion on mental
health, it can also have positive effects. Fashion can be a form of
self-expression, allowing individuals to express their creativity and nature
through clothing and accessories. It can also provide a sense of belonging and
community, as individuals may bond over shared interests in fashion or style.
